I may be slightly obsessed with podcasts. Specifically This American Life.
On May 10th, the radio show will be broadcasting live with a slight twist. They’ll be hosting the show on a stage and streaming it to theatres across the county. So instead of just hearing voices, this episode will feature dance, live music, and a short film as well.
Tickets are less than $20 per person and you can catch the 8:00pm show at several locations around Philly.
Check here for more information.
As a still kind of new resident of South Philly, I’m always trying to get out and explore all of the bars & restaurants in the area so when I heard about this event, my only debate was which ticket to buy.
Flavors of the Avenue is an event being put together buy a slew of sponsors designed to showcase the great dishes along East Passyunk Avenue. The event runs from 12PM-5PM and with a ticket purchase you also get to enjoy beer & wine to wash everything down.
You can order tickets in advance until April 27th but in case you’re a procrastinator there will still be a number of tickets for sale the day of.
Check their website for more information and ticket prices.

I’m always out trolling for new and fun things going on in the city and today I heard about the Cupcake Smash. It’s an event being hosted at PYT which will challenge bakers of all skill levels to create one of a kind confections, one of which will be featured on the menu at PYT for a limited time.
The Cupcake Smash features celebrity judges, raffle items from local businesses, and best of all - the proceeds from the event benefit Philabundance (a local organization aimed at stomping out hunger). Tickets are only $15 in advance or $20 at the door. I’m a big fan of food in case you haven’t noticed so I’ll definitely be putting this on my calendar.

him: Yea, so i have two kids.
me: Oh, how old are they?
him: They’re 12.
me: Twins, how cute!
him: No, they’re 6 months apart.
me: So what do you do?
him: I’m a medical clerk.
me: Oh, okay. Tell me about that. How long have you been in the field.
him: Since January 2nd.
me: Is that something you’ve been trying to get into?
me: So what do you do in your free time? What’s your passion?
him: I don’t have one. I don’t really care if I like a job. I’ll just move on to the next one.
him: So you and her [pointing to the girl to my right] are friends?
me: Yea, we’ve known each other for a few years, we’re pretty close.
him: Oh okay. Well I’m going to pick one of you. But I’m not telling you who.
me: Oh… okay…
oh and i can’t forget the convo my friend had with one guy at the bar during the ice-breaker.
her: Hey, what does your card say? I’m trying to find my matching phrase.
him: [Looks at her card, then his] Well they don’t match but that doesn’t mean I can’t match you. How old are you?
her: I’m 23. How old are you?
him: I’m old enough to be your father, I have a daughter that’s 22.
him: I’m 45. But can we exchange numbers?

Okay, I admit I’m not usually that big of a beer drinker, buuut I have been trying to expand my tastes beyond Coronas, Kenzingers, and Ciders. So if you’re in the same boat as myself, or you just need an excuse to be day-time drunk, I highly suggest checking out the Winter Beer Fest.
It’s being held Jan 22nd at Starlight Ballroom and for$40, you can try over 60 different beers in one of the 4-hour sessions. Don’t worry, it’s easily accessible by SEPTA (because no one wants a drunky driver on the roads) or if you happen to have a friend that’s 21+ but doesn’t get down with the boozin, they can purchase a designated driver ticket for only $10.

I’m hearing about a lot of different things going on in the city… House parties, hotel parties, another event at Vault DJ’d by Biz Markie… (had to throw in my shameless plug). Where are you going to be when the ball drops?
