Quote
"We cannot be consumed by the actions of Philadelphia magazine, because in a city that is 44.3 percent black, 12.6 percent Hispanic, and 6.6 percent Asian, Philadelphia magazine does not represent a majority of Philadelphians. Editor Tom McGrath will not be fired, because he is carrying out a longstanding policy. The magazine will not hire black staffers, because the combination of high-end advertisers and suburban readers has worked for them economically. Nothing at Philadelphia magazine is going to change. But my concern, quite frankly, both as a journalist and as a Philadelphian, is not what an out-of-touch magazine will do. My concern is what we, as a city, will do."

Nerdy Thing of the Day that I Love

I may be slightly obsessed with podcasts. Specifically This American Life.

On May 10th, the radio show will be broadcasting live with a slight twist. They’ll be hosting the show on a stage and streaming it to theatres across the county. So instead of just hearing voices, this episode will feature dance, live music, and a short film as well.

Tickets are less than $20 per person and you can catch the 8:00pm show at several locations around Philly.

Check here for more information.

So here’s the deal for tomorrow. It’s Reading Terminal Market’s 120th Anniversary and to celebrate that they’ve teamed up with LevelUp to give you $10 (on them) to spend at 40 different places. Yes, they want to GIVE you a total of $400 for FREE.
All you have to do is download the app LevelUp for your iPhone or Android and a QR code will be generated when you create an account. You scan that QR code at checkout instead of swiping a credit card or pulling out cash. You’ll see in the app that you have $10 credits at all the places listed on the flyer. If your purchase is under $10, it’s free. If not, you pay the difference. That’s it. Easy peasy. You just scored a bunch of free stuff.
Oh ps, if you don’t have an iPhone or Android - just sign up on the website. As long as you can access the web on your phone, you can access your QR code and they’ll send you a free card with it in the mail.

Hey peeps,

In case you’re unaware - Monday is Martin Luther King Day. So if you’re not busy and you’re looking for some community service to do, this site has plenty of options for you which can be searched by area of the city, or age range (in case you want to bring some kiddies). There’s everything from outdoor cleanups to cooking and even some informational seminars.

Now get up, get out, and do something. 2 points if you can name that song.

In March, New Yorker columnist John Cassidy blogged about the city’s new bike lanes. He was annoyed that they made it harder for him to drive his Jaguar around Manhattan, and bemoaned the city’s bicyclists as a privileged, insular aristocracy, a “faddist minority intent on foisting its bipedalist…

The annual Thanksgiving Day football game between chefs Jose Garces and Marc Vetri is quickly becoming a big holiday tradition in the Philadelphia food world.
Each year, the two acclaimed chefs discard their chef whites for an Iron Chef battle of a different sort: a battle of the pigskin on the gridiron.
The chefs each recruit a team of players from their respective restaurants and put it all on the line: pride, bragging rights and, this year, a hefty check in the amount of $10,000 made out to the winning chef’s charity. Plus the amazing trophy.
This year’s game will be “Turkey Bowl III” and they’re kicking it up a notch: they’ve secured a stadium to host the game: Penn’s Franklin Field.
