This track (and the entire EP) from the trio KING has been on repeat in my iTunes all week. I can’t even begin to explain my love of their music, so I won’t even try.

Also, if you’re familiar with Kendrick Lamar’s Section.80, then you might recognize the middle of this track as he sampled it for Chapter 6.

Hey -KING

A Humpday Spotlight Bonus Round!
I’ve already posted about the artist Mateo before. I saw this morning that he put out another mixtape so I figured I’d pass that along to you guys. I’m literally listening to it as I type this entry so I’ll let you know what I think of it later. So far, I see a few features from artists like Goapele, Pusha T, and Philly’s own Gilbere Forte.

Humpday Spotlight! Even more appropriate because I’m still doing promo-work where we’re doing fun stuff in bars on Wednesdays, but that’s another story…

This week is kind of a two for one. The video I posted is a Frank Ocean (of Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All) song covered by former American Idol contestant Leah Labelle. I love this girl’s voice and can’t wait for her to put out an album. But in the meantime, please familiarize yourself with Frank Ocean.

If you haven’t heard of Odd Future yet, you probably don’t like west coast hip-hop. Or things that are so in your face that you either love or hate it. But anywho, Frank Ocean is the R&B slice of the Odd Future pie and his mixtape nostalgia, Ultra is absolutely delicious. I downloaded this mixtape a few weeks ago and I’ve had it on repeat since I heard the first track.

A few of my favorite tracks are We All Try, Swim Good, and lovecrimes but there honestly isn’t a single song that I dislike.

I'll Be There - Tiffany Evans from I'll Be There

Maybe you remember this 18 year-old from her amazing vocal performance in Diary of a Mad Black Woman when she was just 12 years old. Or maybe you remember one of her hit singles “Promise Ring” with Ciara in ‘07 or “I’m Grown” featuring Bow Wow in ‘08.

Well even if you don’t, Ms. Tiffany Evans is trying to make sure that you never forget her name of voice again. Spring of this year she’s releasing the follow up to her 2004 debut album and if it’s anything like the first single, I’m sure it’ll be nothing short of amazing.

I Kissed a Girl - William Fitzsimmons from Derivatives

So, there’s a few inches of snow on the ground again and I’m completely using that as an excuse to stay curled up in bed all day with my laptop and a hot cup of tea. This track (actually any track from the CD Derivatives by William Fitzsimmons) sounds like what my day feels like. Super chill and relaxing and I’ll never get tired of it. Also, he gets bonus points for looking like a lumberjack but doing a cover of Katy Perry.

Girls Like You - Miguel from All I Want Is You

Humpday Spotlight numero tres! Better late than never right?

Anywho, this week it’s Miguel. I was SUPER late on hearing his track All I Want Is You with J. Cole (another artist I like right now) but then I got his album and LOVE it. I also just came across an interview of his from the Grammy’s last year where he said he wanted this album to kind of be a discover project where people hear it, like it, and pass it along. So here ya go… I heard, I liked, I’m sharing. Enjoy!

Bang Bang Bang (Feat Q-Tip & MNDR) - Mark Ronson from www.best-clips.org

Okay, I missed a few Wednesdays because life has been keeping me busy but this week’s spotlight goes to Mark Ronson. If you’re not familiar with the name, he’d be the musical genius behind albums such as Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black, Wale’s The Mixtape About Nothing, ODB’s A Son Unique, and Nikka Costa’s Everybody Got Their Something, and countless others.

This track “Bang Bang Bang” teams Ronson’s incredible production with vocals from Q-tip and MNDR. I loved this song so much I actually went and bought the physical CD and the album doesn’t disappoint either. For all you D’angelo fans who’ve been wondering what he’s been up to, make sure you listen to “Glass Mountain Trust”.

The album’s called Record Collection by Mark Ronson and the Business International and it’s definitely worth a listen.

Bum Like You - Robyn from Robyn

Alright kiddies, I’ve noticed recently that I mention musical acts to people when they ask what I’m listening to and am met with a look of utter confusion. As such, I’ll be bringing you Humpday Spotlights ;).

First up… Robyn - a Swedish electropop/r&b act that I first heard of a few years ago.

She first popped up on the US music scene in the nineties with some dance/pop hits from her debut album but I’m sure we all know how many one-hit wonders the nineties produced and it looked like Robyn was heading down the same path. For her second album, she tried to get out of the pop mold she’d set so US labels were reluctant to release her album. Robyn stayed her ground and released a few overseas-only albums until 2007 when she released her self-titled album on the label she founded - Konichiwa Records. This album sparked some industry interest and she eventually inked a deal with Island.

Since 2007, Robyn has released several other albums and spent part of 2010 on tour with Kelis. Check her website here to keep up with her latest endeavors.
